Our Story

Fáilte Romhat, a big Irish Welcome! My name is Ciara, the founder of Celtic Flame Savonnerie (Soapery in English). I grew up in Cork, Ireland but have spent the last 25years living and working in Jersey, Channel Islands as a Sports and Remedial therapist.

My journey into soap-making was borne after my only sister was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020. All our worlds were shook to the core. My rabbit hole readings about the impact the products we use on our skin and the potential effects it could have on our health, scared the bejesus out of me. As a woman in my forties, a history of cancer in the family and experiencing perimenopausal symptoms, I knew I had to take charge of what I was not only putting into my body but on it. My passion (obsession) in finding chemical-free products began.

It was only in September 2022 when my husband, our 3 (now 4) rescue dogs and I, moved to rural France that I found time to breathe and started my research into the natural cold process of soap making. I learned about oils and butters, the process of saponification, researched methods, made some soap, researched some more, formulated a recipe, made some more soap (this process went on for about a year) and finally developed a soap I am proud to use.

Despite our own rigorous and exhaustive testing, it is still imperative to get your 'recipes' safety assessed. This means qualified and registered Chemists verify your recipe as being safe for use on the skin. Albeit a wash off product, none the less, sodium hydroxide is used in the soap making converting oils and butters into soap. We have had all eight of our soaps 'CPSR'd' (Cosmetic Product Safety Report) by Cosmetic Safety Solutions UK so you can be guaranteed that our soaps are the genuine article. No funny business happening here!

Our Ingredients

We use a gorgeous mixture of cold-pressed oils, macerated in home grown botanicals, indulgent rich butters, natural clays, hand-processed exfoliants, and 100% pure essential oils, resulting in a luxurious feeling, handcrafted gentle soap.

*Please note, though sustainable options are available, we have made the decision to never use Palm Oil as an ingredient in our soaps.*

SHOP OUR RANGE

After our soaps are made, saponified, we have to wait 4-6 weeks for the process to be complete. When all the water has evaporated, what is left is a solid soap bar waiting to adorn you in your morning or nightly shower ritual.

It has always been our ethos in life to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Repurpose as and when possible. This idea has spilled over into our little soapery business. We all know what its like, you order something from a well known supplier and one small item is delivered in a box ten times bigger than is required and stuffed with a whole load of packing paper! What do you do with it all? And this is just one example, unfortunately we live in a throw-away culture. However, Celtic Flame Savonnerie are committed to doing our small bit for the planet by reducing waste in the following ways;

  • reusing packing paper in orders,
  • using recycled paper for our soap labels,
  • making gift & ‘Thank You’ tags out of off-cuts of card,
  • printing and cutting our own business cards

Though we might not be perfect, we do strive for it. Our commitment has and always will be to offset our carbon footprint by any means possible. We hope that you can join us in making small strides in creating a better future for our environment.
